happy little eggs

Look at me posting about holiday activities BEFORE the holiday actually happens! I actually am hesitant to post these tonight because I know that after tomorrow I will have more Easter pictures to share, but I have some time right now so I figured I would get a jump on it.

John finished up his semester last week and there really are not words for the kind of relief and happiness we felt around here about that. The last three weeks of the semester were truly the most insanely busy, stressful, and wretched weeks of his schooling career thus far. We still have many years left (1 in his masters, 3-5 for a PhD), and there will probably be more craziness to come, but honestly, I think those weeks will be hard to beat. We rarely saw him, he didn't sleep (one of the nights that he was up until 3:30 AM working on something, he came in to the bedroom to lay down only to have his alarm clock go off right then for work), and we were all feeling lonely and frazzled without him around. We are used to him being busy and occupied, but we aren't used to him being non-existent. He had knee surgery on Wednesday and truly, we were so excited about it because we knew it would mean that he could have a few days of down time to rest and hang out with us. We have taken full advantage of having him home this week and were pretty glad to have a low-key day at home to dye Easter eggs together. It ended up being a two day long event (John and I boiled the eggs together late one night, the next day we dyed and decorated eggs with the kids, and then that night John and I boiled and decorated some more by ourselves), and it was so much fun.

Here are the kids all ready to dye their first egg (or eggs, in Pearl's case-- she was not happy unless she had an egg in each hand).

Georgie was excited to watch his sister drop and egg in the dye. He kept encouraging her, "Come on, Peng, you can do it!"
Photobucket

She required much supervision. It was totally a disaster waiting to happen.
Photobucket

She was pretty happy when she plopped that egg down in the dye, and I love that you can see the dye on her fingers.
Photobucket

But then we wanted to let George enjoy himself and do his thing so we thought we'd put the Peachy Baby in her high chair to watch. Um, she was NOT amused.
Photobucket

Luckily her tears were nothing a little cheese bread couldn't cure.

Happy baby-- check. Now George could get to work. (Btw, the leg warmers were all George's idea. We put some on Pearl and he insisted on finding his and wearing them as well.)
Photobucket

George loved doing this so much.

He mostly did his eggs himself, but he did want a little help drawing Bowser (seriously) on one of them.
Photobucket

Pea started to get restless, so while George painted on some sparkles, Daddy walked with her down the hall. (She is loving walking these days. She mostly wants to walk while holding someone's fingers, but she is started to take steps on her own and keep her balance. She can do it if she wants to, but she frequently chooses to lunge/dive to where she wants to go instead of keeping her balance and walking.)

While George and I worked on an egg...

...John caught these little fingers swiping the scissors off of the table. It made us giggle and I was so happy John had the camera right there to snap the picture.

Mama and the babes with their eggies. (Please let's not talk about my bangs. I was growing them out until I saw these pictures. Now I am cutting them.)
Photobucket

Our eggs turned out so vibrant and pretty! This second picture shows why:

Could you see it? Here is a closer look:

We added drops of food coloring (neon and regular) to our dye baths to make the colors that we wanted. We played around with color combinations and ended up with so many cool eggs in the end. I only have pictures of the ones we did that afternoon, but that night John and I made some that turned out pretty good, too. Here is a look at the ones George and Pearl did.
Photobucket

I did not edit or saturate these pictures at all. This is really how bright they are, promise.
Photobucket

Before bed that night Pearl decided a little snack was in order, so she helped herself to her first hardboiled egg ever. At first she wasn't sure about it and kept smiling at us wondering what she was supposed to do with it. She took a few test licks to see what she thought...
Photobucket

...and then she went for it. She really liked it at first, but grew tired of it about halfway through.

Tomorrow should be a happy, full day, and we are so grateful to be celebrating Easter's miracles with people we love. More to come.

the only good thing about a winter storm in May:

the crazy warm wind that blew it in-- absolutely perfect for kite flying!
As soon as J got home from work he grabbed the kites and our boy and they ran across the street to the park. Never one to miss out on fun, I bundled the little Pea up in her stroller and joined them.

I love all the blossoms on the trees, and how you can tell it was windy (you know, besides the kite way up in the sky) by the littered petals all through the grass.

As much as my husband would like to pretend that this kite flying business was all for G, it clearly wasn't. I love how G is walking over to visit his sister in the stroller and J is happily flying his kite.

Pretty soon we got G in on the action, and he was a kite flying pro. He LOVED running as fast as he could,
and then would occasionally stop to look back and make sure his kite was still flying high.

Flying a kite for the first time with your child is magic. It was the perfect storm of wild, warm wind, green grass, popcorn on trees, and a giggling little boy and it made my heart swell right up.
Messy, happy face and those bright eyes. The best.
And this little Pear hung out in her cozy stroller, cooing and smiling at the canopy.
Sometimes things feel overwhelming and crazy and I feel pretty spread thin, but then there are evenings filled with my husband home with us, little boys flying kites, and baby girls smiling at nothing and I can't believe how blessed I feel to be living this busy, happy life.

this time of year means...

...dyeing eggs

G got in on the action with Ems and Rae Rae.

He quickly dropped all the eggs into the dye and then compulsively checked them to see if they were done.

He was very proud of his little carton of dyed eggs and carried it all around with him for a couple of days.

...searching for Easter baskets

This part was very exciting for G. He searched all over the house.

He found his baby sister's basket first, and she wasn't very fond of it, as you can see.

With a few hints, he finally found his basket in the dryer. Oh, he was happy.

So fun for this mama to have two littles to plan for and be with on these special days. I am loving all of the joy that comes with this brother/sister thing.

Nothing better than an entire chocolate bunny all to himself.

...warm-weather haircuts

We were trying to get this boy's hair longish, but I couldn't stand the awkward growing stage, so I gave in and let his daddy get busy with the clippers in the tub. J was so happy-- he has been wanting it short for months now.
(Actual conversation:  J-"He looks like a little boy now."
Me- "What did he look like before?"
J- "A weakling.")

Love the hairy neck/shoulders he is displaying here.

Cleaned the hair out of the tub, and then let him take a "blue bath," which, according to him, is like the coolest thing ever.

After the bath, both the babes had their jammies on all ready for bed. Pea baby must not be a fan of her night cap.

But her brother sure is a fan of kissing her little face. It really is hard to keep him away from her sometimes, and she is not always grateful for all the affection :).

...riding dump trucks around the neighborhood

We have the best neighbors in the world. Honestly, I never want to move away from the kind, generous people we are surrounded by here. A family that lives across the street gave G this PowerWheel dump truck, and he LOVES driving around in it. He is very good at pushing the pedal down with his foot, and has even mastered putting it in reverse. Steering, however? We are still working on that.

...planting the garden

Oh, I can't wait to start being able to grocery shop in my back yard.

G collects shovels. Okay, he only has 3, but he loves LOVES to be in the dirt digging.

Pea joined the party, too. She started out happily in the Moby with me,
but eventually wanted to stretch out.

She was happy there until she decided she was hungry. There were a few warning cries,
and then there was this:
My cue to go in and relax (aka: nurse the babe) while the boys finish up the manual labor outside. I love being the mama!

fall '08 a little late

In an attepmt to completely overwhelm you all with photos I am going to go ahead and lump all of our fallish adventures into one large, over-sharing post. Please enjoy.
The fun began when we headed up the canyon to do some colored leaf collecting from these trees: The trees really were almost fluorescent. Baby G got his exercise as he tried to negotiate running (sort of) up the hillside through weeds taller than him on uneven ground (read: he fell a lot).
Oh the fallishness! We are only sort of bad parents for letting our child wander around outside in October with his shoes off-- we had a pretty mild fall. And this is where our fall adventures blow yours completely out of the water. Sure you went up the canyon and saw the leaves, too. But did you catch a glimpse of this as you wandered around?I didn't think so. Yes, that is what you think it is-- a grown man in a knight costume having a professional photo shoot up in the woods. Totally normal. Yes, I did laugh about this the entire way down the canyon. And also yes, I still pull it out on occasion when I need a good chuckle.

Our pumpkin adventures started where most of yours did. Baby G took his time at the pumpkin patch selecting the perfect one. This is where we are most likely a little different. Probably most of you didn't make your small children push the wheelbarrow full of pumpkins. Probably most of you let the small children ride in the wheelbarrow with the pumpkins. Not us. In our family we subscribe to the theory that the purpose of having children in the first place is so that they can do all the heavy lifting.
This is us doing the same thing as millions of other families around the world-- carving the pumpkins. But once carved, was your child completely OBSESSED with the removable stem lids and did he spend hours taking one lid off and switching it with another? Our child did. If I needed some time to get something done I just stuck him out on the porch with the pumpkins. He was likewise obsessed with the fire inside the pumpkins and went from one pumpkin to another "lighting" it. This is his first costume-- The Fancy Cowboy, complete with a sequined belt buckle and cow print chaps with fringe. And then he'd bend down and get his face as close as he could to the flames. And instead of running to protect my child I just stood there and took pictures of it.
Trunk-or-treat (I hate that phrase) with the aunties, Lucy and Alice.

Another adventure found Baby G in the classroom with me watching a Halloween movie with all the students. The kids that have a hard time sitting still on the rug get the option of "pockets (meaning they can stay on the rug on their pockets)
or chair." Baby G chose "chair."
The cousins found it necessary to swap head attire. I like to refer to them as "pumpboys." Get it?
For trick-or-treating on Halloween night we got to bust out the much anticipated costume that we have had since before Baby G was even born. I was only a few months pregnant when my mom insisted that we buy the baby a Santa suit to wear for Halloween one year in the future. Well friends, this was the year. And it was quite the hit. When Baby G would go to the door to see the trick-or-treaters all the kids would laugh.

Still obsessed with the fire.

The best part of Baby G's Santa costume BY FAR? His patent leather black shoes. Nothing says "Santa" quite like a pair of shiney shoes.

Baby G worked hard for all this candy but he only got to enjoy a little of it. Another parenting theory we subscribe to: any candy your kids get on Halloween automatically becomes yours.

But we did let him have a little, so it was necessary that he brush his teeth. Of course he had Halloween jammies. Do you know my mother?
(Please forgive the poor quality on the last few photos. My lovely husband went fishing earlier that Halloween day and took the camera. I was only a little upset when, upon returning home to join us for the evening festivities, he realized he had left the camera in his fishing partner's car. We made do with the video camera so those photos are snapshots from the video footage of the night).

Still not ready for full on winter, but it's coming whether I like it or not.
